What Motivates YOU?
When I was in uniform it seemed as though I could clearly identify what motivated me at every point in my career.
- My son
- Pay raise
- Leave or vacation
Clear goals that motivated me to ‘Be All That I Could Be.’ These factors forced me to take action towards meeting my goals.
Now that the uniform is off there are some days my motivation is doused by so many other factors in life:
- Just plain tired
- Not feeling appreciated
- Feeling like I’m on this journey alone
- Other personal obligations
To name just a few reasons. To be honest there are some days I just don’t take the required action towards my goals because life factors get in the way or drain my energy. So I started thinking about what steps could I take to make sure my motivation remains high in order for me to reach personal and business goals I’ve set for myself. Here’s what I came up with:
Remember your why. Why did I set the goal in the first place? How did setting that goal for myself make me feel? And be honest. I had to ask myself some tough questions – When I set that goal for myself how did it make me feel? Did I believe I could achieve it or did I not believe? Whatever I believed is what was going to manifest itself.
Just do it.
Just take action – do the very thing you set out to do. If you need help along the way – ASK. If you need training, school or some other resource to achieve your goal – GET IT. Bottom line – Just DO IT.
Celebrate small victories. Every victory is worth celebrating – small or large. I remember graduating from a military school I needed for a promotion and how my family and friends showed up with balloons and flowers. They really celebrated me. I still had some time to wait before I actually got my promotion but that celebration was much appreciated and needed to keep me focused on achieving the goal of getting that promotion and others to follow.
The dictionary defines motivation as ‘the general desire or willingness of someone to do something’ and ‘the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving a certain way.’ Whatever your goals are #BattleBuddy always remember what motivates you. Dig deep and focus on that when the journey seems long.
